Sustainable Soirees Guest Highlight: Kate Kelly

The new Sustainable Soiree team has been hard at work attempting to find the perfect candidate to inspire the community of women leaders for the month of July here in Salt Lake City.  Our superstar speaker this month will be Kate Kelly, an international leader and activist improving justice and human rights around the world. We are inspired by her entrepreneurial spirit and her ever willingness to not only face problems head, but also to take action and looks for ways to fix them. We can only hope to help inspire and build up entrepreneurs as courageous and proactive as she is. We are really excited about it, and you should be too!

Kate’s career highlights include:

  • JD (Juris Doctor degree) from women-founded American University Washington College of Law

  • Legal advisor for Legal Action Worldwide working on sexual violence legislation in Somalia.

  • Founded a group called Ordain Women to advocate for gender equality in the Mormon Church.

  • Ella Baker Fellow at the Center for Constitutional Rights

  • Law clerk at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights

  • Research assistant to the Chair of the United Nations Committee Against Torture in Geneva, Switzerland

  • Post-grad fellow at the Women’s Refugee Commission

  • Attorney at the RFK Center for Justice & Human Rights

  • Strategic Advocacy & Policy Counsel at the Planned Parenthood Association of Utah.

We told you she was a superstar! Kelly wants to spread the following message: "It is important to learn about the gender inequality in our cities and in our world so that we can fight against it and simply demand for women to be allowed to be the bad asses they really are." Gender Inequality is more prevalent in Utah than any other state, and it’s important to be informed on the most pressing issues.  That’s why we encourage you to attend Sustainable Soirees event “From Salt Lake to Somalia: The struggle to end patriarchy around the globe.  Learn more about the topic in our other blog post here.

About Sustainable Soirees

Sustainable Soirees is a once a month gathering for people to make connections, find support, develop entrepreneurial skillsets and be encouraged to live and work in a most authentic way, while working towards more representation of women across all industries and in positions of leadership. We believe that Salt Lake and the surrounding area is filled with talented, smart and brave women (and men!) who are capable of being our community's leaders, changers, and doers. We hope to cultivate a space where attendees are encouraged to meet others who share their goals in order to work together towards creating the best Salt Lake City possible.

We recently got a brand new team to work on our Soirees, and are super excited for them to have their first event! Come and meet them as well as hear from the wonderful Kate Kelly!
